James "Soupy" Campbell Obituary James William "Soupy" Campbell age 76 of Pennsville, NJ passed away in his home on Tuesday, September 12th, 2023. Friends and family are invited to visit at Laughrey Funeral Home located at One North Broadway in Pennsville NJ 08070 on Monday, September 18th from 7:00-8:30 where a short service and eulogy will follow. Burial will be private with the family at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday, September 19th. Soupy was born in Salem, NJ on November 25th, 1946 to his parents Clement and Victoria Campbell. He attended Salem High School where he graduated in 1965. He proudly served in the United States Navy on the USS Hull during the Vietnam Conflict before he was honorably discharged in August of 1969. Soon after returning he began a career in the telecommunications industry that spanned nearly four decades. Along the way he met the love of his life Diana and they were married on December 5th, 1970. They promptly started a family having two children and eventually six grandchildren. Soupy enjoyed playing football for the Razorbacks where he was an outstanding kicker, reportedly never missing an extra point. He later became an avid jogger participating in the Septemberfest 10k multiple times. He also enjoyed playing golf and he could be found on any number of courses in South Jersey and as far away as Florida for many years. He especially loved playing with his favorite foursome in the annual Septemberfest golf tournament. He enjoyed coaching his children in baseball and softball and later also enjoyed being a spectator for his grandchildren's many sporting events. No matter what his hobbies were though, they always took a back seat to what was most important to him-time with his family. Soupy was a loving husband, father, pop-pop, brother, uncle, son, and friend to just about everyone he ever met. He had a smile that was contagious and would light up the room. If he saw that you were down, he might tell you a joke, say something goofy, or sing a song way off key-he wanted everyone to feel good and be happy. He is survived by his lovely wife of 52 years Diana, his son James "Soupy" Campbell (Catherine), his daughter Bonnie Susan Van Atta (Malcolm), and his six grandchildren Sarah, Malcolm, Marianna, Jimmy, Ulysses, and Kassia. He is also survived by two sisters, Susan Elizabeth Green (Larry) and Joyce Lynn Lehew (Tommy), his uncle Walter Zlotnick and by many, many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Clement and Victoria (Goslin) Campbell; his siblings Shirleen Sarah Clement, Barbara Ann Willaimson, Catherine L. Zlotnick, Judith Nell Witcop, Hazel Arleen Massey, Charles Clement Campbell, Eugene Robert Campbell, and Russell David Campbell. Papa Soup will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him, but our memories of the person he was will carry us through until we see him again. Our family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kind words and acts of caring great and small during this difficult time. www.laughreyfuneralhome.com
