Obituary of Catherine L. Mitchell

Catherine L. Mitchell, age 87, of Pennsville passed away surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at the Gilchrist Center hospice in Columbia, Maryland. She was born in Salem, New Jersey, and was the daughter of the late Orlie Hurley and Etta McCallister Hurley, both originally of Elliott Island, Maryland. Catherine was a lifelong resident of Pennsville. Catherine was married to Gordon R. Mitchell for 64 years, until his passing in January of 2018. She is survived by her son, Darryl R. Mitchell of Ellicott City, Maryland, along with his wife Karen Callaghan Mitchell and their two daughters, Shannon and Noelle Mitchell. Catherine was predeceased by her two brothers, Lloyd and Edwin Hurley, and by her sister, Delma Klessel, all also of Pennsville. Catherine loved cooking, gardening, ballroom dancing, and anything that allowed her to spend time with her family. Her family was everything to her and she loved nothing more than cooking and taking care of them at any opportunity; in particular, her two granddaughters. Catherine's sweet tea and her strawberry pies were legendary amongst those fortunate enough to have tried them. She was a great dog enthusiast and was well known for her love of her cherished Pekingese dogs. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday July 23, at the Laughrey Funeral Home, Pennsville where friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service.
